SPORTS AND RECREATION

In the 1920s, Lacrosse was popular until press lost interest and gained interest in Baseball and that's when Lacrosse's popularity declined. Press focused on the violence that occurred in the lacrosse matches. Lacrosse was a summer sport. Eventually, the press lost interest for Lacrosse and turned their attention to Baseball. Automobiles, trains, new roads, buses provided transportation to sporting events. The 1920s contained competent boxing and a professional hockey team; The Regina Capitals. Boxing was popular and successful in Saskatchewan. In 1925, a community pool was opened in Saskatchewan for the first time which gave residents of Saskatchewan an opportunity to start swimming, Tennis, soft ball, lawn bowling, baseball, soccer and golf were also available to the residents and gave them something to do.
George Ward was hired as Saskatoon's first Playgrounds Association's Director in May of 1930, he was responsible for recreation centers that included; football fields, rinks, swimming pool, a cricket pitch and two softball backstops. All of his hard work in the recreation field made a huge impact for over thirty five years.

Hockey was a Canadian sport in the 1920s and became really popular. Hockey was and still is considered Canada's national sport. During the 1920s, the National Hockey League was created for the Canadian athletes to join if they wanted too. After the first World War many people were excited to get the opportunity to watch the Hockey games. Eventually, Hockey was adored by Canadians. During this time a lot of Canadians were dealing with financial problems, besides that, Hockey's popularity kept increasing. Hockey became part of Canada's culture. Hockey's popularity continues to grow to this day, except now it's one of our two national sports, Lacrosse is also considered a National sport.
