The major debut of the entertainment industry was in 1920's. The movies became a part of life for citizens in the 1920's. Silent movies were the most popular during this time period. This phase lasted from 1920 – 1929. In 1929, “talkies'' started to take over the screens and minds of young children. Movies were very popular because of how cheap it was. Tickets were only 25 cents and most children and teenagers could afford them. The theater became a hang out for teenagers as it is now. The most famous movie stars at the time were Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. They were the first stars of Hollywood. In 1927, the Academy Awards had begun. At this time, it was not televised or a big deal during this time. They had 270 people in attendance and gave out 15 awards. Today, the Academy Awards are much larger and popular. The famous cartoon character Mickey Mouse made his first appearance in 1928 in Steamboat Willie. |

The music industry had also started to blow up. In the 1920's, Jazz music was most popular. The Jazz obsessed had began in New Orleans and then moved over to Canada. Parents in this time period were outraged by this new type of music. They would call it the “devil's music”. Jazz was made popular by Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.

Dancing had also became entertainment in the 1920s. Popular dances were Charleston, shimmy, black bottom, bunny hop, fox trot, and waltz. Many of these dances are still popular. American culture influenced a lot of Canada culture. Canadian parents were worried about their children because they did not agree with all of the change in society and culture. The clothing style was also changing. Females who wore short clothing and would do these outrageous dances were called “flappers”. These females would wear short dresses and spend their nights out dancing.
