ART IN THE 1920's The 1920's were a time for new and fascinating art to be created. New styles of art, such as Surrealism and Art Deco flourished and prospered during the 1920's.
Surrealism was a style of art developed in the 20th century, which emphasizes the significance of imagery which is created with automatism or the exploitation of chance effects, unexpected juxtapositions, etc. Art Deco is an eclectic style that combines traditional craft motifs with 1920's imagery and materials. This style is often characterized by rich colors, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation. famous ARTISTS OF THE 1920'SEMILY CARR (December 13, 1871 – March 2, 1945) was a Canadain artist and writer whose art works revolved around the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. She was one of the first Canadain artists to adopt a modernist and post impressionist painting style. As she grew older she began to paint landscapes, particularly, forest scenes.Unfortunately,she did not receive widespread recognition for her work until later in life.
A.J CASSON (May 17, 1898 – February 20, 1992) was a Canadian artist who was a member of the Canadian group of painters known as the Group of Seven. A.J Casson is famous for his depictions of the landscapes, forests and farms of Southern Ontario. He is also the youngest member of the Group of Seven.
TOM THOMPSON (August 5, 1877 – July 8, 1917) was a famous and influential artist in the early 20th century.He directly influenced the Group of Seven, even though he died before the group was formed.Thomson died under strange circumstances, which added to his legacy.
THE GROUP OF SEVEN (1920 to 1933) were a group of Canadian landscape painters consisting of Franklin Carmichael, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Franz Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. Macdonald and F.H. Varley. The Group of Seven is famous for their paintings inspired by the Canadian landscape, and initiated the first major Canadian national art movement.
Literature of the 1920's The 1920's were a time of drastic change in literature. Following WWI, talented young authors, wrote about their feelings of disillusionment and alienation. Literature of the Roaring Twenties was marked by general feelings associated with modernity and breaking traditions.
The 1920's also sparked the The Harlem Renaissance and the "Lost Generation". The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement that developed in the 1920s. At the time, it was known as the "New Negro Movement". The Harlem Renaissance spanned from about 1919 until the early or mid 1930's.The Harlem Renaissance was basically a development of African American culture, particularly in the creative arts, and it was the most influential movement in African American literary history. The Lost Generation were a group of writers who grew and developed during the 1920's.The "Lost Generation" define a sense of moral loss or aimlessness apparent in literary figures during the 1920s. World War I destroyed the idea that if you acted honorably, good things would happen. Many good, young men went to war and died, or returned home physically and mentally wounded, and their faith in the moral codes that had earlier given them hope, were no longer valid and they believed they were truly "Lost." |
